Cove House
Cape Cod, MA
Oriented to the town cove but pulled back on the site to create a vast lawn, this house is composed of a gabled, central living volume with two additional perpendicular gabled structures for sleeping. All three volumes open out to a landscaped terrace. The central great room receives daylight from clerestory windows and a skylight than spans the roof ridge. The clients have a deep appreciation for Japanese craftsmanship and woodworking, which influenced our ample use of wood for the interiors, the decision to express the framing members, and the shoji-like screens that bind interior spaces. The low fieldstone retaining walls surrounding the house are carved into the site and appear integrated with the architecture.
