Chilmark House
Chilmark, MA
Situated on a high point of a wooded property, this house is encircled by a historic stone wall and carefully oriented to maximize views of a meadow and nearby conservation land. The gabled roof and the exterior's cedar shingles and trim are a nod to Martha's Vineyard vernacular architecture. The interior unfolds through a series of interconnected spaces on the ground level, first entering the kitchen, and then moving into a light-filled living and dining area. Bookending the central volume is a master suite that opens to the outdoors. Sliding glass panels allow for cross breezes to blow through the home during summer, naturally cooling the interior. Tucked under the roof on either end of the main living space are a skylit painting studio and an office that doubles as a guest room.
