Ice Chimes
Boston's Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy asked MLA to design a structure that would encourage people to visit its linear series of parks and gardens in the winter. Ice Chimes is a free-standing wood structure that "grows" icicles. A sound-attenuating bucket underneath the pavilion creates an experimental composition as the icicles fall and melt. Even when there isn't any ice, the structure works as an enormous Japanese lantern and a beacon at night. In its second winter, Ice Chimes was moved to Dartmouth College.
